“Utilizing the Four F’s as a Family” By Bill Immel, LPC

If you have children and especially if you also work outside the home, then you know that time is always in short supply due to all the demands of life and needs of a family. One way to make the most of the time you have is to combine what I call the four F’s.

This four F’s stand for family, fitness, faith, and fun.

Family

In order to accomplish results, you have to find a system that not only works but works so well it is sustainable. Having worked at a fitness club as a personal trainer I know that the people who keep coming back are the ones who have a sense of community at the gym.

Fitness & Fun

The same is true with family, but in order to sustain the routine ideally, there needs to be a fun component. Some ideas for this would be playing tennis, racquetball long walks in beautiful places, bike rides, rollerblading, roller-skating, kayaking, basketball (one on one, one on two, two on two, etc.), soccer, badminton, or just bumping and setting a volleyball back and forth.  The great thing about utilizing a sport is that in the process your child actually builds confidence in the improvement of skills.  Mixing up the activities helps promote a well-rounded child and reduces the likelihood of boredom.

Faith

Finally, the faith inclusion could be as simple as talking about a passage in the Bible or a promise of God that is exciting to you.  You could use a small portion of this time to memorize a passage of scripture together, or briefly discuss a practical application of a Biblical command or principle. If this seems too difficult or if your child is not receptive to any of the above, we would love to help you.
